Last night at 3:46 AM a 22 mile wide meteor missed Earth by only 1 inch. Not the atmosphere, the actual crust of the earth. Were you awoken late at night last night and you were out of breath, or maybe your ears popped? This was the result of the meteor tearing a hole in the atmosphere. The atmosphere quickly recovered though, leaving minimal damage to the Earths climate and people.
In California, California City got a little wild when asteroid (7494) Xiwanggongcheng skipped across the ground causing a 9.9 magnitude earthquake and almost caused the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to meltdown. Xiwanggongcheng went from an asteroid to a meteoroid, to a meteor, back to a meteoroid, back to an asteroid all in the span of thirty minutes.
Meteorologists are still puzzled at why this specific meteor didn't show up on any radar. The VHF radar didn't detect the meteor because the ionization created by the meteor was way too high. President Trump has funded the American Meteor Society (AMS) to progress current radio wave technology.
